Macrium Reflect and Total Commander

Post by *cmili »

I've been using TC for ages and ages and indeed cannot imagine being without it.

My main system is Win XP Pro SP3.

Every night I (want to) clone my working hard disk onto an exact copy inside my computer case, so that I never lose more than a day of work, and if there is a problem with the main hard disk, I simply switch the boot order in the BIOS and boot from the cloned disk (has happened twice in 15-16 years).

I have been using Paragon Software to do this for a number of years, but recently for what I need it has not been working well (and their support is awful).

I downloaded Macrium Reflect and it very competently performed the clone, BUT TC STOPPED WORKING after the installation. It just choked up on trivial tasks like changing directories, loading files, etc, and would not exit naturally.

I uninstalled Macrium and TC worked perfectly. I did these steps with both the trial version of the commercial Macrium and the free version, so there is really no doubt at all that the problem is a conflict between TC and Macrium (at least in my setup).

I find it exceedingly strange that two solid well-known programs like these two do not work together. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you,
Chaim

Can't say anything to your outdated XP
but the combination of TC and Macrium Reflect has no problems
in Windows 7, 8.1 and Windows 10 x64

You should start by launching TC with a fresh configuration and see if that changes anything:

Code: Select all

totalcmd.exe /i="%temp%\fresh.ini"

Wow Dalai!
Indeed it does change everything. When I open TC with the parameters you gave me, it does not choke up!
Can you explain to me what is happening and why when I load it without my configuration file TC does work and with my configuration it does not work, and is there anything I can do to make TC with my configuration file work?
Thanks very much,
Chaim

Well, now you know it's some setting in your configuration that triggers (or causes) this issue. Now it's up to you to find it, unfortunately. Start by copying the contents of the [Configuration] section to fresh.ini. If the issue doesn't occur, copy the next section until the issue occurs (you found the causing section). After that, copy setting by setting of that particular section until you find the culprit.
