CA DataMinder prevents write to USB drives

My company started using CA DataMinder that looks at files copied to USB thumb drives and it blocks TC from copying files to or deleting files on a thumb drive.

I tried to use the normal Windows Explorer to select a file and "Send To" the thumb drive and that works.

When I try to drag and drop or just copy from TC, I get a popup dialog box from CA DataMinder that says Warning: you are only allowed read access to 'F:' with application 'TCMADM64.EXE'. I would post a screen shot if I could figure out how.

I'm quite sure that if you use Drag'n'Drop in Explorer you'd get the same warning from that software. On the other hand, you can still use "Send To" in TC: just make a long right-click and you'll get the normal context menu, including "Send To".

Windows Explorer drag and drop does work. When I try the long right click in TC and try to use the Send To function, I get the same error. It tells me to retry as administrator but when I do, it still pops up the error dialog from CA DataMinder.

So, to get this right: In Explorer you can copy (either by drag'n'drop or "send to") without the actual copy happening because that software somehow suppresses the copy action. In TC neither copy method works because that software doesn't prevent the copy action. Is that correct so far?

Did you try any other file manager (e.g. Free Commander)? If they don't work as expected like TC does, you might want to contact CA DataMinder's support. My guess is that they only tested their software in conjunction with Explorer, which is what most companies do, unfortunately.

Not quite. Explorer works as expected with me being able to copy or drag and drop files to a thumb drive without any problems from CA DataMinder.

In TC, nothing works and I cannot copy or delete files to the thumb drive. CA only allows read access to TC but allows all access to Explorer.

I actually noticed the problem because CA also interferes with my USB hardware key dongle from SafeNet. I have a trouble ticket created with our IT people to resolve the problem and maybe they can contact CA to find out what can be done.

I see. There might be some settings in that software which restrict or allow some programs to copy files to/from devices. It's just a guess, though, since their product site is not that helpful (IMO).

This is not a bug. Your company has decided that you are only allowed to use Explorer to write to the USB drives. You have to ask an admin to allow Total Commander.

Sorry for the confusion. I have started a trouble ticket with our IT department and hopefully there is some setting in CA to allow me to use my favorite utility.

From reading this, it looks like if TC is a trusted application, the write should proceed, but I don't have a clue how to make TC a trusted application. It is probably under the control of the Network Admin people.

The whole reason they use DataMinder is to scan all content being written to a thumb drive or burned to a CD or DVD to try to detect data that looks like SSN's or some other protected customer data.

Since this is an International forum, do other countries have an equivalent identity number to the USA's Social Security Number? Just wondering.

I think you can try enabling compatibility/explorer copy method in TC copy/delete options...

I agree. You may ask the administrators to make TC a trusted application.
