Tips for using TC on a small monitor?

Hi,

I have been using TC since it was called Windows Commander, all this time on desktops with reasonable sized monitors.

Lately I have begun mainly working on a 15.6" laptop and find using TC uncomfortable due to the space it takes on the screen, specifically when I want to drag files from TC to a browser window.

I move TC around and everywhere it is, it hides other windows, overlap stuff etc.

Do you have any TC configuring tips for working on a small screen? What works for you?

Well, you can hide title if you don't need it, also menu bar may be hidden and shown by Alt keypress or via buttonbar button - using TCFS2. Other panels may be more useful so you should hide them on your wish. Smaller fonts - if they are still readable. Smaller buttonbar buttons. Drive bar may be hidden if you use drive combobox bar or vice versa. And so on...

I too use TC for long time and it definitely wasn't always with reasonably sized monitors/resolutions. It was only 800x600 for few years and 1024x768 for several more. I never used TC maximized, only as smaller window and never had any problem with it.

I don't think that your problem is really with TC, it's the same with any other program. It's just that if you're used to larger screens, going to something smaller is always step back. All the stuff that previously fit nicely on the screen suddenly does not and it hurts. You'll get used to it after some time.

I'm surprised that you call 15.6" small: My convertible Windows tablet (Samsung ATIV Smart PC with Windows 10) uses only 11.6" with full HD. I'm using TC mostly in full screen or almost full screen mode, and it works well.

And the computer on which I developed Windows Commander was an 80386 with 20 MHz, Windows 3, and 640x480 (VGA) with 16 colors on 14". It had a HUGE 64MB (yes, MB, not GB) harddisk, and initially 4MB, later 8MB RAM.

Thanks for the tips about making TC smaller on the monitor.

I thought about the answers and the issue and realized that several versions and years ago, I didn't drag and drop files from TC to a browser window. This is the reason full screen (in any resolution) wasn't a problem.

You can always use Alt+Tab to switch between windows during dragging, and also you can drag files to taskbar button of desired window to bring it to front and then drop files there.
Or you can use Copy and Paste for selected files, it will work just like drag-n-drop.
Or you can open both dirs in TC of course.

Dragging the file to the taskbar button is a very good idea. I will try to learn this habit.
