I apologize for forgetting. Please remind me how to change the default quickview of a folder from "details" to "extra large icons"
BACKGROUND: Right now I see the file details when I am in quickview mode (ctrl-Q) and my cursor rests on a folder. I can right-click to change the view to "extra large icons" to see a checkerboard of tiled thumbnails. Nice. But when I move my cursor to the next folder I see the details again.
default folder quickview is "details"

I think nn1k3 is talking abut the plugin view provided by HTMLView or IEView. But I cannot see how to lock the view either.
EDIT: I found it. Since HTMLView/IEView uses Windows Explorer to show folders you have to change how Windows Explorer show things:
Open Windows Explorer (File Explorer in Win 8.1 / 10) and go into a real folder (not a library) for example on drive C: and change the display to your needs (right click an choose "View").
In Windows 7 click "Organize" (upper left corner)
In Windows 8.1 and 10 click "View" -> "Options" -> "Change folder and search options"
Click the "View" tab in the Folder options dialog and click the "Apply to Folders" button.

Thank you petermad.
Yes now I see the preview of all the jpg files in a folder.
FYI I use HtmlView only for this purpose, and disable it when I am not organizing photos. Also I configure HtmlView by disabling everything but these two lines:
