Very often (but not quite always), when I open a second Excel file via Total Commander by double-clicking it or hitting RETURN while it is highlighted, a new instance of Excel is started. I get the Excel splash screen and then the message "PERSONAL.XLSB is locked for editing // Open 'Read-Only' or click 'Notify' to open read-only and receive notification when the document is no longer in use."
However, if I open that same file by double-clicking it via Windows Explorer, no 2nd instance of Excel is create and all proceeds normally.
This problem never occurs with Word. Or with any other program.
I am using Office 365 with the latest patches on a Windows 10 machine. However, I've had this problem for about six months and it persists through updates to both Office and Windows.

Are you running Total Commander with higher user rights (as admonistrator)? You can see a ^ character in the title bar if this is the case.
