Move / Copy Popup Box Intermittent?

Post by *enjikari »

Hello all, and thank you for letting me join the board. I have an issue I'd like to hopefully have resolved. My apologies ahead of time if it just turns out to be 'operator error' - tends to be from time to time.

I've been using TC for quite some time. Back in the day it was pretty easy/routine:
1. Open TC
2. Navigate to the "from" folder in the Left column
3. Navigate to the "to" folder in the Left column
4. Highlight files/folders that I want to copy
5. Click-and-Drag those files/folders onto the "To" folder
6. A pop-up box with many options would pop up
7. Select desired options, and GO

Lately (over the past several months or so - hard to pinpoint an origin time), it seems I intermittently get that Options box. Some times I do, but most times now I simply get a "Copy all these files Yes/No?" box, and when I click Yes it just pops up the standard Windows "Copying Files" pop-up. It's as if I'm in TC, but when I tell TC to copy files, TC just tells Windows to do it on its own. I much, much prefer TC to copy my files, for many reasons - after all, I wouldn't need TC if I preferred to just copy/paste via Windows... And I've ALWAYS click-and-drag'ed my files over, I've never had to use, say, the buttons on top or keyboard commands - and I'd prefer to keep doing it that way. It's easier for me.

Any thoughts, Commanders?

My guess that when it happens for you you are dragging your files to a virtual folder like \\Documents

Check in the location bar above the file panel in either source or taget side whether it starts with \\ - that indicates that it is a virtual folder (or a network share). Copying to and from virtual folders in TC is done by Explorer.

I will try this out the next time I'm moving files. But, let me ask ahead of time:

If TC is somehow interpreting the source -OR- destination as 'virtual", how can I fix this? I know for sure the Destination folders are standard folders, as they're usually straight to an external HDD. But AFAIK the Source files come from a folder in an internal HDD. Do I somehow have a folder as a "virtual" one? I ask because I'm not entirely sure what that is, nor how I have set it as such. Forgive my ignorance in this area - I'm pretty PC savy, but this one's a new one for me.

Virtual folders are lists that Windows shows as folders even though they are not. It can either be a list like Control panel, or a concatenation of 2 or more folders like the Desktop (\\Desktop consists of c:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\ and c:\Users\Public\Desktop).

If you for example in TC's menu use "Commands" -> "Open Desktop folder" it is the virtual Desktop that is opened. And from there the folders "Computer", "Recycle bin", "Control panel", "Libraries" and "Network" are all virtual folders.

TC can show virtual folders, but rely on WIndows Explorer functions to handle them (copy, move, delete, open). Some archives like zips are shown as folders when inside a virtual folder.

Virtual folders has their own ID's in Windows Registry, that you can use to access them with - you can for example open the Libraries by typing:

Code: Select all

cd ::{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}
in TC's command line or in a button.

Here are other virtual folders:

Peter

Thanks friend, this was the issue! So I opened TC, and instead of selecting the 'Drive Overview' button I went into the actual drive and navigated to the folder/contents. Selected some, then drug them to a destination drive... and the popup window with selections came up!

So yes, in the future, I will always navigate directly to the content and not use Drive Overview. Thank you again - admins, this is Solved for me!!

You can still use the drive entries from the Drive Overview, just don't use the directories, if you want to avoid virtual folders.
