Everything Toolbar on my system often required selecting it as a toolbar multiple times in a session. This was the motivation to maintain the same functionality without using Everything Toolbar.
The basic method is using a keyboard mapping program to access Everything directly using the same keystroke as Everything Toolbar.
1. Download WinKey 0.70, from https://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Launchers-Shutdown-Tools/WinHotKey.shtml. The original site no longer exists.
2. Install it. It consists of two files totaling 1.5 MB
3. Run WinHotKey.exe.
4. Configure Ctrl-Space to run Everything. Ignore the message about Windows key conflicts.
5. For a tutorial see https://www.ghacks.net/2010/01/18/configure-hotkeys-with-winhotkey-windows/
If you want mouseable access to the Everything search window, add a button in Total Commander or attach a shortcut to the Taskbar.

Re: Alternative to Everything Toolbar
I don't see the point in your suggestion.
Using the Everything toolbar has nothing do to with just invoking Everything using a kotkey.
This can be done without your suggested tool from TC and many other tools.
The Everything toolsbar is always visible in the taskbar
and I can simply start typing into it to get results
which are then automatically feed to TC using toolbar rules.

Re: Alternative to Everything Toolbar
In Everything there are 3 ways to set up SYSTEM-WIDE hotkeys, namely
in the menu "Tools" -> "Options..." -> "General: Keyboard".
Everything must be started if the hotkeys are to be executed.
Click in [one of] the fields below and then press the desired key(s).
Note: Pay attention to the description of the field in the tooltip.

Everything must be started if the hotkeys are to be executed.
Click in [one of] the fields below and then press the desired key(s).
Note: Pay attention to the description of the field in the tooltip.
- New window Hotkey: Shift key + Pause key (example)
- Shift + Pause key opens a new window - system-wide
- If Shift + Pause key is pressed in Windows Explorer, a new search window is opened and
the path is automatically inserted into the Everything search box
- Show window Hotkey: Ctrl + F11 (example)
- Ctrl + F11 shows the search window. If a search window does not exist a new window is created.
- If Ctrl + F11 is pressed in Windows Explorer, the search window is opened and
the path is automatically inserted into the Everything search box.
If this process is repeated, then the path is overwritten with the current path from Windows Explorer.
- Toggle window Hotkey: Pause key (example) <- This is my favourite
- Pressing the Pause key shows the search window. If a search window does not exist a new window is created.
- Pressing the Pause key again sends the search window to the background -> toggle the search window!
- Press Backspace to clear the Hotkey (see tooltip).

Thanks for educating me about the native keyboard facility in Everything.
I will need to read the docs closely for other features I might like to use!
For me, this makes redundant Everything Toolbar, https://github.com/stnkl/EverythingToolbar.
