the search returns unmatched characters

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

That's right. For real editing in the real life, we'll use these editors.
BUT! The question was not in misunderstanding how to edit this file!
The essence of the question/bug is that there is no way to find what I need
with minimal effort. And in a parallel to understand everything WHAT I do and why.

In the end, editors were given as an example only because they also have the ability to
display the string we are looking for and search for it among many other, similar strings.
Lister also seems to have these capabilities on the one hand, but they are somehow logical
are not fully linked. Above I gave an example of how easy it is to render and search for
everything in one case.
And how strange everything breaks and stops working when I change just one option.

WONTFIX: Behaviour that, instead of fixing a bug, declare it a feature.

1. Wrong. It CAN be converted to ASCII. It is copied from there, but cannot be converted back.
2. You find text in files, open a lister, and search for a place, and will not find same text (or will find a different text).
3. Missing the same warning in Lister.
4. Not searching the text in ASCII mode where this text IS visible.
5. The ASCII mode is obsolete and comes from time when there was no Unicode. But you at least can have a different font. Though, you can set only Terminal, which is buggy. The issue with terminal font on modern Windows and non-latin codepage also was marked as WONTFIX.
6. The ASCII mode should work synchronically with ANSI mode+manual set codepage to ASCII (possible pitfalls?).
7. What about the third "variable char width" mode? haha
8. The author does not come here after moving thread to "not changed"?
