TC crashes when copying file from phone via USB

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

TC crashes when copying file from phone via USB

Post by *hberner »

TC crashes instantly when copying any file from a Samsung A32, A50 or S10 phone to PC via USB.
The above phones are what were available in the office for testing :)

Using File Explorer to copy files works perfectly.

Using TC 11.03 (x64).

I removed all the plugins without any change.
Nothing is logged in TC logfile.
Windows does create an 18 MB crash dump file.

How do you start the copy process: F5, Drag'n'Drop, context menu, hotkey (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V)? At which point does it crash? Does it happen when you start TC with a fresh wincmd.ini like this:

Code: Select all

totalcmd64.exe /i="%TEMP%\fresh.ini"
#101164 Personal licence
Ryzen 5 2600, 16 GiB RAM, ASUS Prime X370-A, Win7 x64

Plugins: Services2, Startups, CertificateInfo, SignatureInfo, LineBreakInfo - Download-Mirror

I usually use F5, but tried with Ctrl+C and that also makes it crash.

Started with the fresh.ini, and still the same.

Running on Windows 10.

After plugging in the phone, it shows up in the drive list.
So I just click that and then browse the phone folders like normal (by clicking on them).

Tried the different options in the Copy/Delete Configuration, like using copy+paste via Eplorer. TC crashes with them all.

Interestingly deleting a file with F8 works.

Ctrl+C/V from/to phones copies via (hidden) context menu copy+paste functions.

Therefore the problem you have is most probably a faulty shell extension (context menu handler).

To correct it, please try the following:
1. Get the free tool ShellExView:
https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
2. Start it.
3. Sort the shell extensions by type
4. Disable all "Context Menu" shell extensions one by one (you can hide/keep those belonging to Windows, they are usually OK).
5. Continue until Total Commander stops crashing (make sure to close TC after each test)
6. Now you can re-enable the extensions which don't cause any problems

I have disabled all the Context Menu extensions (except those from Microsoft) and still crashes.

Well, then you might continue with the Copy Hook Handlers. To rule out most background programs and services you can also start your system in Windows Safe Mode and try copying files there.

If that doesn't help either, I would try rebooting after disabling all context menu extensions.

Try using the ADB plugin.
We are not so S.M.A.R.T. as we imagine...
