Open a virtual folder like \\Documents (cd ::{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}) or \\Pictures (cd ::{59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}\Pictures).
Copy some *.jpg files to the virtual folder.
Go into TC's Thumbnail configuration.
Disable all the "Loading Thumbnails" methods except"Internal thumbnails form images" for *.jpg
Turn Thumbnail View on in the virtual folder file panel (Shift+Ctrl+F1).
No thumbnails are shown !
Now:
Enable "Use Explorer method (OLE2) for" *.jpg (or *.*)
Reload the virtual folder.
Now the thumbnails are shown.
Since folders on the u1 drive (Phones) are also virtual folders this also affect the Phone's DCIM directory

Sorry, it's not possible to access these virtual folders from internal functions or from lister plugins, because there are no functions to read from files in virtual folders directly. TC would have to copy the files to a local directory to do this. However, it will continue with the next method if a method can't extract anything.
Therefore I will unfortunately have to move this to "will not be changed", sorry.
Maybe add a line in the Help for Thumbnails in the paragraph "Use Explorer method (OLE2) for:" saying something like: "This method is the only one that will work in virtual folders, here under folders on cell phones."

I don't think they would actually disable the option, but they might change the file-type list to rule out for example *.jpg because the Explorer method is pretty slow at generating thumbnails, and instead pass *.jpg's to IrfanView/XnView for those *.jpg's that do not have an internal thumbnail that can be extracted with the "Internal thumbnails from images" option. People who have done that would have a problem with files on their phone, because external programs like IrfanView cannot generate the thumbnails either on the phone.
