Post by *Strogg »

Is it possible to implement such feature in next TC version?

At the moment it's not planned, sorry. I have considered several ways how to do this, including discussions here, but haven't found a good way yet to include it.

What about, we open several tabs and you add checkbox

[ ] Copy to all tabs.
[ ] Copy to all tabs and close them all.

?

Maybe this is right time to consider re-design of copy/move dialog again. We had such requests recently, and I stated that there are other operations users would need in the future. Future is here, after just several days (as I predicted).... and you have to make some decisions to make everybody happy or to ignore us again and improve your postion as .... you know !

If you want to improve this dialog, I am free to create several possible choices along with some other users here (for instance, Flint) and we can choose one to be the final.

what if i have N different locked tabs on each panel to which i don't want files 2 b copied?
have you ever seen DiFolders prog?
as TC 7 will have temp panels they also could b used as virtual folders. u could "assign" different folders to that panel and after pressing smth like Apply button (or immediately) all its content would b copied to all "assigned" folders (but panel itself wouldn't show their contents). temp panels could b the real power!

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

Then we will have yet another set of checkboxes to deselct some of the tabs once or for all... (in copy context, of course)

What a pity! :(

Btw, in addition to all suggestions stated here I would like to add my own:
To copy the files to multiply destination using Tree with checkboxes in copy/move dialog. (Together with command line support: Folder names specified there and separated by commas like in Far Manager)

Maybe your idea is good when a user performs such copying rarely or to different folders each time. But if (s)he wants to do it periodically during a session to some sets of the same folders, i think my variant could be a better solution. Anyway i suppose that time needed to open a tab and time needed to "assign" a folder to a temp panel (virtual folder) would be practically equal.

So my variant has at least 2 advantages comparing to yours:
1. No need to open many tabs and litter file pane
2. No need to waste time checking desirable tabs (as a user may lock new tabs and open other tabs to which copying is not needed)

(3. No need to redesign copy dialog -> less possible bugs.
But as redesign is a wish of many users, so i exclude it)

On the other hand, your idea is implementable in present conditions whereas it is unknown (to me) what possibilities temp panels would provide.

If someone wants i'll try to make a picture illustrating my vision of a virtual folder.

I don't like the tabs idea at all. Too cumbersome to configure/maintain.

Nevertheless, this multi-destination function seems very straight-forward to implement. Here is one relatively simple appoach:

In the Copy/Move dialog, in a dropdown combo, display the list of Directory Hotlist submenus. The user selects a Hotlist submenu from the combo, then TC iterates through the the Hotlist folder entries for that submenu, copying/moving.

Objection: There is ambiguity of behavior if the Favorites submenu hierarchy (selected as the destination list) is more than one level deep.

Solution 1: Specify a default behavior... for instance, by default TC might traverse only the first level children of the selected sub menu, ignoring any (sub)submenus.

Solution 2: And/or TC might designate a special naming syntax for a Hotlist submenu intended as the parent for a list of "destination" folders. Then only the so designated Hotlist submenus would appear in the copy/move dialog's "destinations" combo box.

Since copy/move destinations are also likely to already be HotList entries, this approach makes sense to me. Also, the dialog for maintaining the destination lists is already implemented.
