[Req] Showing thumbnails in FTP server
I see a FTP Client that can to show thumbnails in ftp server:
WS_FTP
http://www.ipswitch.com/products/ws_ftp-server/screenshots.asp
So it will be nice if this feature will be in TC too.

I can see a lot of icons being used by WS_FTP in the various screenshots offered on the page.
Yet, sorry, I fail to see where WS_FTP displays thumbnails of any files on an FTP server.
Did not read anything about it, neither in the features list, nor in the "what's new" text.
What did I miss, if anything?

If you take a closer look at the screen, you will see that the thumbs are shown on "My Computer"... so on the local side, not the remote side...Xtrician wrote:Here is a picture:

I already read that... For me, the text sounds like "easy(ier) finding of images which can be uploaded". Nothing more... Did you try the program? Did it show thumbnails on server?Xtrician wrote:See here what they write about the program:

Its possible.
Ok, we can go on with this forever, because so far neither side has taken the pain of downloading, installing and checking out WS_FTP in order to verify if WS_FTP will show thumbnails on the FTP server or not.
Hm, I guess we should skip this painsome verification procedure and start shooting each other right away instead. After all wars are based on beliefs and disbeliefs. Facts are just there to destroy beloved prejudices.

If you do a search on Ipswitch:
[face=arial]New Features in Version 8.0
Thumbnail Support
WS_FTP Pro v8.0 includes support for viewing and generating
thumbnails for image files on local and remote views. When
changed to thumbnail view, WS_FTP Pro will attempt to read
thumbnails from a Microsoft Thumbs.db file, an Ipswitch
IpsThumb.db file, an NTFS stream (if the server is running
with an NTFS file system), retrieve a thumbnail image by
downloading a portion of the remote file, or by downloading
the complete image file and generating a thumbnail image.[/face]

ok guys, i downloaded it... and: It does support thumbnail view on remote side
BUT: It downloads the entire image! One by one... No chance to stop it once you activated thumbnail view. If you scroll, I would expect the program to load thumbs which are visible in the scroll area, but no... 1 by 1 from the beginning...
So I dunno if this feature is really useful...

Ok, so Xtrician was right: WS_FTP 8 can show image thumbnails for the FTP server side as well.
This has been sufficiently confirmed.
The question which everyone may answer differently depending on his download speed and his personal patience is if
+ It would be fine for usage in our local area network.
+ It will be a pain in the a.. for usage in the world wide web.

I have decided against it just because it requires a complete download! So in the end you would download the images twice, once for the thumbnails, and once for getting those you need...

The only good way would be to support a mechanism which downloads a thumbnail database from the server and then displays the thumbnails in the remote window.

i just came across the need for it today:
we're looking for visual means to organize a lot of images on remote SSH servers (e.g. web, customer's data, and more)
we need just to verify, delete or rename.
download is not an issue, and if it's done in the background (as it is anyway, afaik), it's not a problem for most users.
our problem is upload times: it can take hours. (all local ISPs make this limitations due to their business model)
we don't have gui on the remote linux machine... so it's a hassle...
