Sorry, using the XNView/IrfanView method for Thumbnails is a new feature of Total Commander.
I remember petermads posting of a wincmd.ini -example for "jpegthumbs". Hope that could help you a little bit.

Well there is quite a difference between normal Lister functions and the function for thumbnails. The normal Lister function is far more powerful. It let's the plug-in create an interactive window. The thumbnail function returns only an image of the requested size. The advantage of simple images is that they can be cached for faster reuse. In addtion many "thumbnail Lister" plug-ins are optimized for scaled down images.

That's not really true. TC only supports thumbnails which it can also display in the Lister (BMP, TXT and WMF).
All other are provided by "Thumbnail Lister" plug-ins, by the Explorer method or by an external program.
If you have multiple thumbnail providers available choose the most suitable for you.
