Yeah, somone read manuals, someone not
I hardly ever read the manuals, no matter what the software (except for development tools like Access, Delphi, or ASP.net, naturally). If the functionality isn't apparent in the interface, I usually miss it. My loss, I guess. I'm mostly a pointer guy anyway. Currently using my Wacom tablet with TC instead of the mouse.
Overkill, IMHO.
Well, screen real estate is precious. I conceive of permanent tabs that I would want all the time, but also of temporary tabs that might be needed "at the moment"... if I needed more room for additional "temporary tabs", it might be nice to temporarily "hide" (is that a better word than "Close"?) a permanent tab to provide more room for another temporary tab but without actually deleting the permanent tab from my configuration.

Perhaps that means we'd need a "Show" function, too.

Perhaps that's really a vote for named tab groups... I can imagine an image group, and audio group, a customer locations group, etc, all defined by the visibility of tab.

Are tabs going to derive from my favorites list?

As an aside directly to you: Did I offend you about Mozilla or something? Didn't mean to step on toes. Sorry if I did. We all have our likes and dislikes.

Nobody of us wants that, dont we ? ;)

Well, you shouldn't be surprised with RTFM then ;). AFAICS this thread is about new shortcuts for new functions, so if you don't know well existing ones it's quite strange (for me) to suggest something "new". Sorry, nothing personal.

Well, this is like Directory list and History - you see, I always wanted Commander to save history, so we have some vital difference in whole problem approach :). As for me, I suppose to have several double panelled working links and just use one of them for purposes you mentioned as "temporary tabs".

This way you just substitute Directory list functionality, IMHO.

J> Are tabs going to derive from my favorites list?

Well, I don't know. Are they? :)

Of course not, I'm using M$IE this moment, actually :). Sorry if I was too harsh with INS and manuals :).[/face]

Juhuuu! Tabs are coming. Great and many thanks!!!
ghisler(Author) wrote:  Should I use Shift+Enter too to open a dir in a separate tab? This could only work for dirs, because it already has a special meaning for archives (open in associated packer).
Yes that would be cool
ghisler(Author) wrote:What exactly should happen when the user presses Ctrl+T? There are several possibilities:
1. A new tab is created with the same path as the current, but the current tab remains active
2. As 1, but the new tab becomes active
3. A new tab is created with the same path as the current, the tab is activated and the cursor is put in the address field.
The second option should happen!

Because if you press CTRL+T, then you want to leave the current directory somewhere and go use the new one.

With the key for opening a folder in a new tab without entering it:
There it should be option 1 because if one does that, he always
wants to save that folder for later.

Yep, versatility is the key.

Yeah, Christian, please make all of us happy! :)

Well, I think this Frigate screenshot says it all. Of course I'd hide the "tabs" themselves, I really hope it would be possible.

w> BTW, how about a way to save all source and destination
w> tabs for future use

I do hope it goes w/o saying it will be possible... This is how it works in DN, BTW.
Moreover, I think it would be a good idea to save sorting order, separator position i.e. all possible changes for any double paneled working unit opened.[/face]

You can make this command yourself:
1) add the following Start Menu entry:
Command: c:\path\to\your\tc\totalcmd.exe
Parameters: /L="%P" /R="%T"
2) add cm_NewInstance=701 (or any number in 701-899 range; this number should correspond to the position of newly created entry in Start Menu) to totalcmd.inc;
3) add MENUITEM "New TC Instance", cm_NewInstance to your MNU file.

I cannot decide at the moment. Moreover, users may change their mind, so IMHO the ini parameter for this is the best choice.
ghisler(Author) wrote:although many people will dislike the changed hotkey for the multi-rename tool.
For these people (either lazy, or inexperienced in redefining keys, or other) you can add addiotional step to installation wizard (I think such people use this wizard instead of unpacking) which will ask if the user wants to keep old mappings for certain keys and a list of checkboxes below for each change in default keys. For ticked keys (checkboxes) you just write appropriate entry in [Shortcuts] section of wincmd.ini to keep old mapping.

For example, for Ctrl+T - Ctrl+M change:

* Keep Ctrl+T for "Multi-Rename Tool" instead of "New Tab"
* Keep Ctrl+M for "<User's current redefining from wincmd.ini>" instead of "Multi-Rename Tool"

Certainly, the latter checkbox shouldn't appear if Ctrl+M is absent in [Shortcuts] of wincmd.ini.

Default state for checkboxes of first type can be OFF, for the second - ON (because user intentionally remapped that particular key).

Probably two buttons "Keep all! Don'r dare to touch!" and "Change all, I give up".

To indicate users who already passed this wizard step (I mean future versions installations, e.g. 6.01) TC can add some entry in wincmd.ini (like FirstTimeUnpack, FirstTimeZIP, etc).

BTW: Shift-Enter also runs the file under with noclose.pif IIRC.

And I vote for
2. As 1, but the new tab becomes active.

Jonas wrote:I think a tablist for both windows together isn't nessesary; you can use multiple TC-instances.
Great. That's what everybody's doing so far. I believe though that having a single mdi window with tabs to handle is better than having 5 windows. That's why everyone is adding tabs in their applications.

Having tabs in source-dest windows only, does not solve the problem, sometimes it may complicate things. Imagine if you have 5 sets of source-dest windows (each tab in the source has a relevant tab in the dest window and in all 5 cases you use both windows to perform a specific task). Having 5 tabs in the source and another 5 tabs in the dest window will make you think every time what tab to select in order to perform the desired task. Having an MDI form with tabs for both windows and perhaps also having the ability to change the name of those tabs to a more descriptive one, will make your work much easier because each mdi-tab represents a single task for you. I have created a screen of what TCmd may look like if both tabs are implemented. I'll try to upload it somewhere and post a link.

Normally using latest TC on:
x32: WinXPx32 SP3 (very rarely nowadays).
x64: Clients/Servers - Win10/Win11 and Win2K16 to Win2K22, mainly Win10 though.

wanderer,
There are also cases where one tab per side is better that one tab per both sides.

Yes, i know, i said it in a previous post. That's why i asked if it is possible to have both ways and activate/deactivate each one on demand.
