Problem with alignment in Configuration dialog

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Problem with alignment in Configuration dialog

Post by *now »

The distance between "Show filename in..." and its children isn't the same as between itself and its siblings, e.g., "Show volume labels...".

Perhaps this is intentional, but it looks a bit weird.

This happens because in order for the 3 options at the bottom to be enabled, the one at the top must be checked. It's like the last 3 options are "children" of the first one :)

And that's why I wrote "children" in my description. However, the children are not equidistant from their parent in relation to the distance between the parent and its siblings.

Yes indeed, it's intentional.

I have complained about the size of the indentation of those three items several times during the alpha test. It seems that Ghisler is afraid that there might not be enough room for the text in some translations of TC if he moves those boxes to the right.

I guess no one gets what I mean. The thing is that the three sub-items are closer to their parent than the parent is to its previous sibling. I.e., the distance between "Show filename in file list as tooltip if truncated" and "Win32-style tips with file comments (if available)" is less than that between "Show filename in file list as tooltip if truncated" and "Show volume labels/network paths for drives".

Ok, i think i got it now. You are talking about the vertical distance, not the horizontal alignment, right? If yes then i agree with you, the parent and the first child are very close.

Yes, the vertical distance. Sorry, I was so into using the whole "family relation" terminology that I wasn't thinking that there was an easier way to express what I meant :-).

I see - yes, I made this to show that the items belong to that one above them...

Ok, but isn't the indentation enough? I just think it looks weird that their closer together vertically. A horizontal indent is fine with me.

Anyway, no biggie either way.

Well, I think the vertical distance should be equidistant

And I also think the indentation should be bigger (like the indententation in the Layout section) - right now it look more like a mishap than an intentional indentation.

I cannot make it bigger without risking that the text no longer fits in for some languanges. :(

Well, since the only string of those 3 that is inherited from the previous TC version is:

Code: Select all

"Win32-style tips with file comments (if available)"
then this string is the only one to be concerned about. This string happened to have had the [+] button (Add custom fields by file type) to the right of it, but does not have that anymore - so that ensures that there will always be enough space for moving this string 11 pixel to the right, since the [+] button is 19 pixels wide.

The two other strings:

Code: Select all

"Comments from descript.ion/files.bbs"
"Comments from &Explorer (OLE2)" "User-defined:"
are new, and therefore they are for now only present in the lng files released wih TC7pb1.

I have checked all of those language files. The only one that could have any problems if the strings are moved 11 pixels to the right is Slovak, but even here there will still be 12 pixels space between: Poznámky prebera￾ z Prieskumníka (OLE2)" and
"Definované používate¾om:"

So I don't think you have to be afraid that the text will no longer fit for any languange.

BTW: the strings 6136 and 6137 are not translated in Èeský (Chech), and the string 6138 is not translated in Polski (Polish). The string 6138 is cut off in Netherlands (Dutch) already.

Hmm, what do other users think about this?
I think that it depends:
1. If you cannot increase indentation: Keep it like it is now!
2. If you are able to increase intendation: Equidistance!
