7z packer support

Hello,

It would be great if you could enable 7z support in the standard kit, 7z is much smaller than other formats and supports files over 2GB. Their lib is LGPL, quite developer friendly, but their GUI is poor, so TC support would be great.

Btw, many plugins are not useful if they are not in the standard kit, too much conf to do. If you own their copyright I suggest to include as many as possible in the install.

I disagree. How many percent of the people know about 7zip? 2%? Perhaps 5%?

sadly, the percentage is low. so what? 7zip could use some wind in its back. and how many people know of uc2? dead archive format with a dead homepage... why not dump it and replace it with a wrapper to a well documented and well built 7za.dll?

on the other hand, there are two plugins (one very good, one not so good) that give us 7zip support so i don't really need that option...

First, thanks for the quick answers. I did not know about the existing plugin, cause either it is not on the ghisler site, or I couldn't find it quick.

1. I think that the popularity numbers are not so bad for 7zip:
Downloaded: 119690 times on totalcmd site.

Perhaps these are like 1% of your users, but it is the subset of people who found the plugin and who took the time to install it. It is not about installing it in TC once, but rather installing it in TC on every workstation where work has to be done.

2. 7-Zip is used inside InnoSetup as the default compression method. It is by far the best compression method available in InnoSetup, or ANY setup.

3. It is LGPL and GPL, so we embedd it inside our setups to have an archiver at hand for tech support. I would be surprised if more indie developers do not go this way.

4. Zip is going to take a dive, it does not support files over 2GB.

5. Last but not least, these guys deserve a boost for building the best archiver on the market and giving it away for free.

And IMO 7zip is far worse archiver than TC

Other than that if it comes to choosing between .tar, .gz (in Windows???) or .rar (shareware) and .7z, I'd happily vote for the latter for the reasons so well put by rares

I totally agree, I think 7z-Support is a must! Iwould love to see it built-in in TC especially because the Plugin for 7z is not working properly

If this is really true why should anyone write a plug-in? The 7-zip plug-in is quite popular compared to other plug-ins.

Support. I think it would be good to replace option "ACE" or "LHA" or "ARJ" with "7z" in the Pack files dialog. Because the 7z archives is more actial than ace or lha or arj.

Hi,

I came across this thread while searching about 7z support for TC. I am quite surprised that it is not yet supported, even more about the comment of the
developer. 7z has simply the significantly better compression rate compared to all others supported. This is highly appreciated where traffic realy matters.
Even if 7z was used by only a few people until today, why shouldn´t it be TC to give a helping hand in establishing a broader base of users for the better tool!?

I think that there are a lot of people looking for 7z support in TC, and there are even more that will be glad to have learned about it here, once it is supported.

How about using the plugin?
This is imho a better way to use as it is far more easy to adapt changes...

Hi,
please correct me if I am wrong:
- the plugin can not be found in the TC plugin section
- I ve searched for the plugin using Google, and the pages I came across,
one pretending to deliver the plugin, one pretending to be the developers
homeppage, made my browser somehow act a little nervous, flash, scripts...

Definitely appreciating the work of the plugin deveolper, I would preferr to
have 7z directly suppoted by the TC developer.
