You can never copy folders to "nul", only files.
And I understand why this is so clearly.

I used this feature to test the integrity of files uploaded on a floppy - after copying, you copy them back to "nul" and see if they are readable... I see no other purpose of NUL, am I blind? :)

If this is your situation, you can press CTRL-B to display ALL files in subdirectories, then select them all and copy to NUL.

That's it!
No matter how many fish in the sea,
It'll be so empty, without me!

To verify your copies, why not use the absolutely best way: Synchronize directories?!?! Check Subdirs, by content, and ignore date. This way, you will get a 100% verification that the copies are identical and working.

The NUL device is very good in batch files, ie copy a.txt a: >nul will suppress "1 file(s) copied." - message on the screen.
Using Windows without Total Commander is like driving a car without a steering wheel!

nul is a protected device name. you never can create a directory called nul.

Good thing about "Synchronize Dirs" - surely better than copy to nul :)

But then, j.x, chris, what is the purpose of a nul device in Total Commander environment? I think it is left "as is" for compatibility only...

It has nothing to do with TC, it's an operating system issue/property/feature

Oh, come on, guys... %) Just copy to "\\.\nul\", not "nul". But system should be NT-based.[/face]

Sorry to sound simple here, but what does this do and how are you doing it? Just trying to learn. :)

"F5", clear path, type "\\.\nul\", hit return.[/face]

It's sufficient to enter nul as the target, TC will translate this to c:\nul (which also works as target).
