Romanian Translation

Post by *drac »

Hi,

Can the translation files use unicode characters?
The Romanian translation is using the old s/t cedilla characters (şŞţŢ), which should be used for code page applications.

But since Total Commander is using unicode, the new s/t comma bellow characters (șȘțȚ) should be used. The s/t comma bellow characters are part of Tahoma / MS Sans Serif since Windows XP.

The 64bit version should be safe to have the new s/t comma bellow characters, since it doesn't run on Windows 95 :)

Cheers

I just replaced the old characters with the correct characters in WCMD_ROM.INC WCMD_ROM.LNG WCMD_ROM.MNU.

I've used UTF-8 encoding and I've also changed the codepage to UTF (codepage=65001).

It worked perfectly. With Total Commander 7.56a and 8.0ß1
Now the characters are looking perfect, my problem is that I've learned the English menu accelerators and they are different in the Romanian translation.

BTW the installer uses MS Sans Serif font and the old characters look awfull on Windows 7.

Are there that many Windows 9x/2k users that use the Romanian translation? I don't see a reason why not update to the correct Romanian.

You can't use it in the installer, but it should be no problem with TC itself (it uses Microsoft Sans Serif by default). Btw, Win2k has no problems because it's Unicode too, just Win9x/ME cannot handle it.

I've put the modified files here.

Windows 2k is Unicode but I fear that MS Sans Serif and Tahoma fonts might not include s/t comma bellow characters.

I wonder how many Windows 2k users which use the Romanian translation are there? Can somebody test the files I've posted?

Two things came up while glancing over the UI:

1. The usage of |Esc and |F1 appended to some button labels. This is unacceptable, the English translation doesn't have such "guidelines", and besides every Windows user knows about Esc and F1.
2. The usage of mouse as foreign word "mouse-ul", "mouse-lui". We've adopted the word in Romanian as maus since at least 1998.

Cheers.

I've fixed the issues above.

I've changed the name of the language in the language menu, as spoken in Romanian - "Română".

The labels of the function buttons had colons instead of spaces, for example "F3 View" was translated as "F3:Vizualizare".

The updated files can be downloaded from here.

I just saw that Total Command 8.0 was released with the old Romanian translation.

:(

@ghisler please don't tell me that you haven't updated the translation just because Windows 9x doesn't support the correct characters (șȘțȚ)?

Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8 do support them!

That's correct.

I can host the new files on ghisler.com (language section) if you want.

Excelent, having it in the Languages section provides better visibility, and give some credibility. I hope more Romanians will choose the correct translation.

In the meantime the translation for 8.0 can be downloaded from here.
