Hello,
I am having an issue trying to copy a large amount of data from one Windows 2003 server (32 bit) to a new Windows Server 2008 R2 server (64 bit). TC is running on the 2008 R2 Server currently.
When I am copying a 34 Gb folder, I select to copy NTFS permissions, and start the transfer. I am copying data from a shared folder on the 2003 server to a local folder on the 2008 R2 server. The transfer starts and copies very quickly until it raaches about 50%, then it seems to hang for hours on a different file each time.
Is there a log generated somewhere that I can review to determine exactly what is happening when the file transfer stops?
Also, when this happens I wait hoping that it will continue. Last night I waited over night about 12 hours but it never continued. I try to cancel the operation but TC does not respond, forcing me to end the peocess. Following this the server hangs when I try to log out, and I am forced to power it down and restart. This has happened a few times now.
So, in summary, my questions are:
-Is there a log that I can review to determine why the file transfer stops?
-Is TC compatible with 2008 Server R2 64 bit, or should I run TC from a different machine? Perhaps from the 2003 server, or a different computer altogether with each share mapped as a drive? I would rather not run it from the 2003 server since it is in production and I can't risk it hanging and needing a reboot.
-Are there any limits on folder size that can be copied? This folder is 34 Gb, but there are others I need to transfer with NTFS permissions intact in the future that are larger.
Any other input is welcome.
Thanks

The server may be running out of file handles - it keeps them open for a short while after copying, and a virus scanner may be doing the same. It's also possible that the drive is fragmented.

Thank you ghisler. As a test yesterday I actually ran TC from a different computer this time, a laptop running Windows 7 32 bit and the folder copy ran all the way through. It was quite a bit slower than from the 2008 R2 server though. I had both the target and destination folders mapped as drives on the laptop.ghisler(Author) wrote:The server may be running out of file handles - it keeps them open for a short while after copying, and a virus scanner may be doing the same. It is strange that it seems to run fine on Windows 7 32 bit, but freezes about half way through on Windows Server 2008 R2. Is there a log file that I can check to see what is happening when it freezes during the folder copy? I checked the Event viewer and havent found any errors or warnings when it stops copying.
Thank you

You can turn on logging in Total Commander in menu Configuration - Options - Log file.

Thanks ghisler
I turned on logging, but there were no errors being logged when the file copy stopped on the Windows 208 R2 server.
I've gotten around this by using a separate computer running Windows 7 32 bit and mapping the target and destination folders as drives. The file copy works perfectly now, I just copied a 400 Gb folder without issues.
Thanks
