File Comparison

Post by *sandr62 »

Hi everyone,
This one was probably posted before but I searched all the archives and couldn't fine what I was looking for.
I am looking for a plugin or tool that can help me to compare large amount of files from two different folders by size. Not by files name that what TC does.
So, I can find those files that been renamed accidentally and move them to another folder.
I am a wedding photographer and dealing with large amount of JPG files.
We all know that digital camera creates files with unique file sizes. Even if you made the same shot twice the file size will different ( just a few bytes)
So, for me this is the only way to find renamed files.
I can do it manually but it would take a few hours.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

It is still possible to have different shots with same sizes.

I think you need a tool that searches for file duplicates. Or you may try to enable duplicate search in TC: Alt+F7, Advanced tab, Find duplicate files checkbox and set corresponding options (same size). But maybe you will need to compare contents too because different files can have same sizes.

It would be more useful for you to find duplicates by date&time from EXIF, but TC can't search for duplicates using WDX fields yet (there were some suggestions like this but with no success).

In my experience the same size never happened.
The last couple of bytes are always different.
But you're right.
It is possible.
Even from the entire wedding if I would have one or two files with the same exact size I can easily handle that.
I just used your suggestion and it helped.
How come I didn't think of that way? :-)
Probably was too frustrated.
I very often use Compare Directories and was looking something similar to that interface.
Any way, thanks a lot for your help.
You saved me many hours of my valuable time. :-)

You are welcome! :)

I just opened folder with photos from camera and sorted by size - found a lot of files with same sizes. But date&time from EXIF should be different - it is hard to do more than one photo per second. :) BTW you may use custom column with EXIF date&time after searching for duplicates.
