Newer TC versions use TOTALCMD.chm instead of TOTALCMD.hlp. Anyway, both files should be in TC installation folder.
Also, if you use Windows 7, you may need to install update that will allow to open HLP files (that program is not included by default).
My TC is : 7.57rc1 32bit (10.2.2012)
My OC is : Windows Xp Professional Service Pack 3
I think I have the latest version because I have installed it only a few days back.
I hope I answered right.
Thank you in advance.
Hello, sajjan.
The installation package definitely does not bring along the totalcmd.hlp file any longer.
This has been changed a long time ago:
In the past, Total Commander came with totalcmd.hlp and you had to download and install totalcmd.chm separately.
The past few versions came with totalcmd.chm and - if still available at all - you have to download and install totalcmd.hlp separately.
On Windows XP SP3, there is definitely no need whatsoever to return to totalcmd.hlp. Just make sure that totalcmd.chm is in the folder %COMMANDER_PATH%. That's all.
Navigate to the T.C. programme folder. Double click on totalcmd.chm. The helpfile should be displayed without any problems. If instead you receive an error message, please, check whether the executable file hh.exe (Html help file viewer) is present in your Windows folder.
Can you open other .chm help files by double clicking them inside Total Commander or inside Explorer?

P.S.:
The final change from totalcmd.hlp to totalcmd.chm must have taken place with the release of Total Commander 7.50 way back in September 2010. Cf. this request, please.

I think someone had explained a few things on that topic for me to answer.
This is so amazing when I wanted to answer, I got another error message, as below:
In order to try to prevent spammers, we do not allow our users to post URLs in any form until they have posted at least 1 legitimate posts and have been with us for more than 1 days. We appreciate your understanding in this matter in order to help us eliminate spam from this forum. If you have somehow gotten this message even though you meet both of the criteria, please let us know ASAP.
Thanks!
I am now at total loss as to what to do next.
By the way if I can post my answer now, it is as below:
Sir,
1. I searched whole system drive and found five files:
TOTALCMD.Exe, TOTALCMD.Exe.Manifest and TOTALCMD.Inc in Commander path and one TOTALCMD.EXE-1D747F8B.pf in prefetch directory.
I also found one hh.exe in windows directory.
I tried help immediately after I started TotalCommander both by clicking on 'Help' on right top of window also by pressing F1 key, with same results.
Sir, I am below average user on technical side of computers therefore all that I did was with utmost care not to leave any mistake on my side.
I am sorry to bother you repeatedly, Sir.
Thanks in advance.

Sir, I have removed then reinstalled Total Commander but problem remains same.Gral wrote:It should be TOTALCMD.CHM in TC directory!
This is the problem - not TOTALCMD.HLP absence.
There is a buggy info dialog about TOTALCMD.HLP, but it seems Windows thing, not TC.
Try install TC again.
To moderators: please merge these two (same title) topics!
Moreover, I when i encountered this problem, it was really hard for me to contact Total Commander. Then after lots of efforts I found this site to express my problem.
Sir, persons like you seem to be very nice to come forward and help novices like us but I am a bit offended by custom messages on the site like below:

At the time when I am trying to find solution to my problem, such messages seem to push me one step distant to get help.
However, I thank you once again Sir, for the efforts you took to help me (which did not work for me not your fault, Sir).
I give up, will not log again on this site.
Re: Help file
There is an e-amil adress for support from author of TC; you can contact him in the beginning and if the forum can not help.sajjan wrote:...Moreover, I when i encountered this problem, it was really hard for me to contact Total Commander. As said above, try to download the software again and install it again. If it does not help with the helpfile, but TC ist running fine, you could conatct the author to send a helpfile via mail.
Why? You got correct and qualified answers which should solve the problem. If the problem keep on there will be further checking ...sajjan wrote:...I give up, will not log again on this site.

OK - this is ultimate solution:
1. Run Total Commander.
2. Find file tc757rc1.exe - installation program of Total Commander
3. Place cursor on it and press CTRL+PAGE DOWN
(Now you should see 7 files)
4. Place cursor on INSTALL.CAB and press ENTER
(Now you should see 4 directories and 29 files)
5. Enter to directory e
6. Open TC directory on opposit panel and copy (F5) file TOTALCMD.CHM to it.

A note about protecting forums from spam
Hello, sajjan.
Hoping that even if you really do not log in you may still choose to monitor your own thread:
Why?
Because each and every forum is constantly haunted by spam bots. They create an account, create one post holding their spam message and links to advertisements and then they leave, just to return using another newly created account.
Each and every forum takes steps trying to protect from spam.
So what are you told?
In order to be allowed to add a link, e.g. a link to a screenshot, to a post you must fullfil 2 mild prerequisites:
Already several users have asked constructive questions and given constructive pieces of advice.
You experienced a problem when using Total Commander. There is no better place to ask for help than the Total Commander forum. Giving up on the very first day is simply not smart at all.
Kindly think about it. And take Gral's posts [1] [2] into careful consideration before giving up. I'd be amazed if he were not on the right track.
Cheers,
Karl

Please, do not feel offended in any way as a person by those words. Every new user may come across this message.sajjan wrote:I am a bit offended by custom messages on the site like below:

- you must have posted 1 regular post before. - You have already posted 4 of them.
- you must have been a member for more than 1 day. - You joined today, February 16th. This means, either on February 17th or 18th, you will be allowed to include links in your posts.
This reaction is very emotional and - sorry to say so - not too smart. This forum is one of the most active and most helpful places I have come across.I give up, will not log again on this site.

Hi, MVV.
I see.
Had assumed you might have totalcmd.hlp - downloaded and installed separately - in addition to totalcmd.chm.
Anyway, totalcmd.hlp does not even seem to exist for anything newer than T.C. 7.50a. (2010)
Cheers,
Karl
