Windows complete lock when finding program icon

Post by *habell »

I'm running Windows Vista with TC 8.0 32bit.
In version 7.51 I didn't have this problem.
When TC is scanning an EXE file for the program icon (It happens with very small files and very large files), windows is completly locked. After about 5 second even the mouse won't move.
After about 20 to 30 seconds windows is release and the icon is displayed.

Is this an error in TC or somewhere else? I couldn't find the solution (apart from reverting back to TC 7.51).

TC needs to load a part of the exe file to read the program icon.
This cannot be prevented.

Scanning files on a local harddisk is very fast (you will not see any delay)
Scanning files on a network drive is very slow.
You may prevent loading icons by unticking according option (Configuration - Options - Display - Icons : Show icons for special folders)

Another reason for a slowdown may be your antivirus scanner.
(disable "on access scan" temporarily just to verify it)

Please change the following option in
Configuration - Options - Display - Icons:

All+EXE/LNK to All.

This way TC will not load per file icons, just class icons (a common icon for each extension).

After about 5 second even the mouse won't move.
It looks like a damaged hard disk. Or the hard disk is in PIO mode instead of UltraDMA.
We are not so S.M.A.R.T. as we imagine...
