Suppose you have an archive. You enter it and compare some file with file from other panel, edit it and close compare tool. TC asks if you want to repack modified file into archive. Possible results:
1. You answer No. TC deletes temporary file immediately.
2a. You answer Yes and TC is able to repack file. It repacks file and deletes temporary one.
2b. You answer Yes but TC can't repack file (e.g. read-only archive or you have no plugin to pack such archive type). TC keeps temporary file.
Suggestion is to keep temporary file in all cases when it is not repacked, i.e. 1 and 2b (maybe until TC close).
Today I compared a source file and copied some changes to it from another one and then closed compare tool. I forgot that it was an archive folder and not normal one. When TC asked to repack file, I thought that I don't want to modify this archive so answered No. I expected that TC leaves temporary file so I could copy it to desired place... But I lost modified file because TC deleted it.
Do not delete temporary unpacked file after editing
