Fn emulation for Windows 8 keyboard

Post by *Tr0n »

Hi,

Just I switched for a new computer and I have a problem with F buttons. ON the Windows 8.1 F buttons don't have traditional functionality. Each time I need to press Fn+F5 for copy. Is it possible to adopt TC for Windows 8 keyboard layout?

On my Lenovo X240 I don't have this option. Best solution is Windows version of Palua which is a small program (but for the OS X) to quickly change between function keys and media keys for each program.

SharpKeys:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/map-any-key-to-any-key-on-windows-xp-vista/

http://www.randyrants.com/2006/07/sharpkeys_211.html

Works fine with windows 7 and i heard someone saying that it also works with windows 8..

Alternative wait or search for a bios update from lenovo:

SharpKeys with Windows 8.1 is working just for F1-F3 keys.
This same problem I have with external Microsoft keyboard, so if this is possible "FN emulation" option on the Total Commander can be useful for many people.

Just wait a while.
I'm relative sure that Lenovo will modify the bios of your notebook to map the function key as primary keys without any modifier.
There are to many applications where user-interfaces make intensive usage of function keys (not only TC).
e.g. : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/vstudio/da5kh0wa.aspx

Yes, maybe they will do this because I see a lot of requests for this, or maybe this is something connected with certification for Windows 8.1 and they can't.
Even if they will add this in bios, it will not work with external keyboard which I am using too.

At the moment Windows 8/8.1 is not very popular but on the future this can be useful option for many users.

If this would be the reason, it's just another point why windows 8(.1) is not certified by me.

In most cases AHK would be able to solve this, but I think laptop extra-function FN keys don't actually send a key-code, the action is handled internally.
*BLINK* TC9 Added WM_COPYDATA and WM_USER queries for scripting.
