Clearing Network Neighborhood

Post by *GraemeC »

This is an odd problem, though hopefully with a simple solution.

With a couple of systems on my LAN, the Network Name was all lower case. I wanted to clean this up a little by having those names begin with a capital letter. Problem. In Windows, these names are not case sensitive. So, when I tried to change "linda" to "Linda", Windows did not recognize that any change was being made, and so wouldn't let me save it.

To get around this, I decided to change the name twice. First to "Lindas", and then to "Linda". If I had turned the wireless card off before doing this, there would have been no problem. Unfortunately, the system booted once while it was named "Lindas", with the wireless card activated. Now, on my primary system, when I go to Total Commander's Network Neighborhood, both "Linda" and "Lindas" show up on the list (at least "linda" is gone). Since "Lindas" will never be used again, I don't want it cluttering up the list. I'd like to get rid of it, but how?

There are also two other systems on the network, whose names in Total Commander do not exactly match their current network name, which I would like to adjust. Again, how? I've had a look at wcx_ftp.ini and wincmd.ini, but the information is not contained there. The only other file in the totalcommand directory which has been modified today is one called default.br2, but removing that has no effect either.

First of all it will help if you tell us which Windows version you are using.

For removing an entry from the Network Neighborhood: Did you try to simply press "Del" key at the according entry?

Windows 7, though I don't know if that's relevant. I see the same kind of thing on Windows XP systems.

A couple of hours later, and now BOTH of those names have disappeared from the list (although I can still connect to the system by mapping to the drive letter). I'm thinking at this point that the system is just slow to refresh and that the right one will come back in time. But there is a "Refresh <LNK>" line in Total Commander, but it doesn't seem to have any effect.

I tried what you suggested, pressing "Del" at one of the entries. When I hit enter, it came up with a message

Preparing to delete
from Network (Network)
Discovered 1,224 items (1.42GB)

I wasn't sure what it might have been starting to delete that takes up 1.42GB, so I hit Cancel.
