Managing the hosts file in Windows 8 with Total Commander

Post by *gezgin »

This is a tip rather than a question and a big thank-you Christian.

Windows 8 has made it rather difficult to manage the Internet Explorer hosts file. If you google the subject you find solutions that involve a lot of hoop-jumping. With Total Commander however it is a breeze.

In one pane navigate to c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\

In the other pane navigate to a folder in your personal Users hierarchy.

Copy hosts from the first pane to the second.

Open hosts in the second pane with a text file editor like Notepad and make changes in it as you will.

Copy the edited hosts file back to the first pane taking advantage of ToCo's Administrator privileges.

You're done.

THANK YOU TOTAL COMMANDER!

Usually I do the following:
1. Press Win+F4, F4Menu window appears,
2. Choose "F4Menu ^" item to start elevated F4Menu (which starts Sudo with parameters F4Menu.exe -f), confirm UAC request,
3. Choose text editor to edit file in elevated mode.

For some reason, I can't use your tip, MVV.

When, on the last step, F4Menu opens the Notepad++ editor as admin, it doesn't at all open the currently selected file. Instead it tries to create a file, named something really weird with Chinese letters!

If I use the F4Menu in Windows Explorer it works fine. :-(

Instead, I've resorted to creating a Favourites menu item which runs sudo np++ with the current file. I hooked it up to the shortcut Ctrl-Alt-F4, so I can get at it decently easy.
