hi,
i have a folder contening many foldings
one have 3500 folders inside
another have 1500 folders
a last one have 500 folders
All are on hard drive not ssd, but my system is quiet fast in hardware.
i notice there is a time delay each day before haveing the folfing listing.the the one with 500 folders is real time
the one with 1500 need a busy cursor and less than 3 seconds to list the first time
the one with 3500 folders need more than 3 seconds and use the cursor busy too.
my global question, is "what is the number of folders before delay-cursor folding?" does the cursor-busy appear after XXX folders inside?
Firstly, when the cursor busy is display, the other side of TC is froze, i have to wait the end of the listing process. can i cancel it ?
secondly, when i close and reopen TC, i noticed the delay is disapear when i try again to list the big folders, like there was a cache system of that listing. Can we adjust this cache life-time ? is ithis TC or windows7 who manage that listing cache ?
have a good day
Mike

Yes, Windows is caching these folders. I can recommend to defragment the harddisk from time to time - at least, defragment the directories.

how to know if my directories are fragmented (windows7 does not say that kind of information) ? cause i'm pretty sure the disk is unfragmented at all.defragment the directories.

I have written a small tool with code from sysinternals which allows you to see the number of fragments and their distribution:
https://plugins.ghisler.com/addons/showfrag.zip
Usage:
1. Unzip to any directory
2. Drag&Drop the program to the Button Bar
3. Right click, "Change"
4. Change parameters to: %P%N
Now you can put cursor on a file or folder and then click on the button to see the number of fragments.
