Drive list (ALT + F1 / 2), Desktop is missing

Post by *wanderer »

The drive list (ALT + F1 / 2), seems to be missing the Desktop virtual folder. Is there a reason for that? Why not have i.e. a - drive for Desktop?

Normally using latest TC on:
x32: WinXPx32 SP3 (very rarely nowadays).
x64: Clients/Servers - Win10/Win11 and Win2K16 to Win2K22, mainly Win10 though.

Hi, wanderer.

Telling from the TC help about wincmd.ini
ShowExtraDrives=3 Show extra items in the drive dropdown combobox. Sum of:
1: My Computer
2: My documents
a dedicated item for "Desktop" does really not exist.
Personally I have not missed it, actually I have switched off the other 2 pseudo drives as well.
In particular on Ubuntu/Linux Mint they are of no use anyway.

But yes, the <Alt><F1> / <Alt><F2> dropdown lists cannot be made to display the Windows desktop.

Cheers,
Karl

Link to Desktop, Libraries, Net, Users' home, System

But on the "Current directory"-box above the file list,
on the left, there is a small triangle [v]
to reach Desktop, Libraries, Users' home, and such.

Confirmed, the tiny little triangle [v] does offer the "Desktop". - But this is not the "Drive List" drop down menu.

OK, thanks to all for adding your input to this.

About he little triangle Stefan2 and karlchen mentioned, this is part of the breadcrumb bar, which i have disabled, so i didn't remember it was there. IMO, since Christian went into trouble and added the other most important virtual folders in the drive list (Computer and Documents), it would be useful if he also added there the Desktop folder (a commonly used folder by many users). It could be added as drive "-". When several windows are open and the desktop is covered, one could use drive "-" to do a simple copy of a file or execute something, and not have to do a Win+M just to execute a shortcut and then restore all windows.

The little triangle could be useful if it was visible without the breadcrumb bar, but is it accessible via a shortcut key (i.e. ALF+F1)? Personally, i'd prefer a drive "-".

Using the breadcrumb bar the hotkey is Alt+F11/Alt+F12. Then Press DOWN and ENTER.

Another waysto open the Desktop by keyboard is assigning cm_OpenDesktop to a hotkey.

Using a pseudo-env. string in a user command assigned to a hoitkey opens the physical user or common desktop folder:

Hey Lefteous, thanks for this.

Or a similar button in the buttonbar, which is what i ended up doing. Not what i had in mind, there is no uniformity but it will do for now.
