[Solved] No 7z archive creation without a plugin

Post by *Horst.Epp »

I don't understand how the new internal 7z packing should work,
If there is no packer plugin for it.
In this case, the Pack files dialog doesn't offer any 7z format.
In the new 7Zip packer dialog, the option "Use internal 7ZIP packer" is enabled.

When you press Alt+F5, there is a new radie button labeled "7ZIP" in the middle of the 9 available options.

I found it, but this gives the following error on packingr:

---------------------------
Packer
---------------------------
Error packing files!
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Tested with TC x86 and x64, also with a fresh ini file.

Maybe you need to untick the option in "Configuration - 7Zip packer - 7 ZIP - Prefer 7zip plugin if installed" and try again?

No, that doesn't make any difference.
Also, it would be strange as there is no plugin installed !

It works now, after some playing around with the settings.
Don't know what was wrong ?

I can add that the first time I tried the Internal 7-Zip packer using a clean ini file (to rule out interference with my 7-Zip plugins) I got the same error as N_Usul.
I tried the 7zG.exe option and it worked, I tried the Internal option and it still did not work. But after I closed TC and started it again with that clean ini file it worked - no idea why it did not work in the first place. I have not been able to reproduce it since - but since 3 persons have reported problems - there must be something to it.

Maybe the Total7zip plugin from my main TC, that I used to start the TC instance with the clean ini from, had the 7z.dll running in the background and that prevented the second instance of TC to work with the internal 7-Zip packer?

I can use internal dll or external 7zg.exe, but not plugin (Total7zip), even if the "Prefer 7zip plugin if installed" is checked (and "Prefer internal 7zip packer" checked and path to 7zg.exe wrong or missing).

Yes, It seems that "Prefer 7zip plugin if installed" is only working for opening a 7z file, not for packing it.

If "Prefer 7zip plugin if installed" is enabled and I press Alt+Enter on a file inside a 7z archive it shows that the packer is 7z (Total7zip.wcx)
If "Prefer 7zip plugin if installed" is disabled and I press Alt+Enter on a file inside the same 7z archive it shows that the packer is 7zip (dll)

I get the same file if I pack with 7zg.exe, with "Use Internal 7ZIP packer" and with "Prefer 7zip plugin if installed" - it is only if I choose 7z - plugin (with different compression parameters) in the Alt+F5 dialog that I get another file size for the same packed files.

Yes, It seems that "Prefer 7zip plugin if installed" is only working for opening a 7z file, not for packing it.
This is true and intentional:
When packing, you can either
1. choose the "7ZIP" radio button, then TC will use internal 7-zip. You can confirm this by clicking on "Configure", it will show the internal 7-Zip packer page.
or
2. choose "7z" from the plugins list behind the -> radio button to use the plugin. You can again confirm this by clicking on "Configure", it will show the Total7zip packer page.

When opening an existing 7zip file with Enter, TC will use the preferred packer, and select it when you try to add files with F5.

I found the culprit! It was the path of some files, which exceeded 256 characters. After removing these files, 7zip's internal functionality started working.

Maybe the legend should be changed from:
"Prefer 7zip plugin if installed"
to
"Prefer 7zip plugin for opening and adding files"

"If installed" is obvious and don't need to be mentioned

I think it's well described in the help:
If one of the plugins 7zip or Total7zip is installed, open the archive with that plugin when entering it with double click or Enter. When creating new archives, you can either check "7-Zip" for the internal packer/calling the 7zg executable, or -> "7z" to use the plugin.
