The onehanded DropNdrag!!

Post by *brian »

You know how you can drag and drop files in Windows Explorer and you can NOT in TotCmd because it copies everything you drag and drop?
You CAN drag and drop, but you have to use TWO hands to press the shift key down?

Well actually, you can drag and drop with one hand in TC!

1. pick up files normally, with the lefft button held down, and move the mouse to the target area.
2. also press the right mouse button down, so that now BOTH mouse buttons are pressed down. The mouse pointer will change into the SHIFT symbol, a square with a black horizontal bar in it.
3. Now, LET GO of the LEFT mouse button, et voila!

I apologize if this was known long long before, but i've been asking about this forever, since 2001 or so on the other board, but nobody answered me!

welcome on board.

It is (at least) possible since Toatal Commander 5.51, Windows Commander 5.11 wasn't able to do it.
Total Commander Help search for 'drag and drop' wrote:- Keep the ALT or SHIFT key depressed to move the files instead of copying them. This will be shown by a minus (-) sign in the drag cursor. New: hold down the right mouse button before releasing the left button, then release the left button first to move the files!
But thanks for the attempt anyway.

brian,
thanks for your little tutorial.
The one-handed drag&drop works on the Tabs too, check it out!
The TC-Wiki would be the right place for that!

Kind regards

Didn't you see the remark about the shift key in my first post?
You CAN drag and drop, but you have to use TWO hands to press the shift key down?

Of course I have seen it. I wanted to point your attention to the part:

 Sorry for not noticing it. I have seen the 2 new posts you had written when I answered to you and assumed you are a newbie.

No offence meant.

Thanks for your welcome and your thanks for the attempt.

BTW the answers show me that this feature wasn't so well known as I had thought.

Kind regards

goes to show you, you don't know everything! ;) I was really wondering whether it was well known.

Now, is there a way to reverse this? I mean, that you can drag and drop with using just ONE mousebutton, the left?

tnx!!!

Certainly, it's possible. Just try it! :)

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

I guess brian want's to move files with only left button and copy with additional right button.

And that's not possible by now, AFAIK.

Maybe with autohotkey.... ;)

INI-Option, but---

Post by *Clo »

2brian

:) Hello !
- This could be requested as an INI variable entry, I guess it should be possible …

- In some text editors, I get that behaviour (for text), while in others I have the TC one ( that I prefer).
- The inconvenience -in my point- of view- is that you deprive yourself of the simple "Copy" fonction always via D&D when needed…

 Kind regards,
Claude

claude, inconvenient?

I move much more than I copy, especially across volumes/drives.
Everybodys HD capacity is limited, so I guess thats valid for everybody.

You'd be surprised how many duplicates i regularly find with wincommander dup finder.

But I doubt that Ghisler will change it, it's been like this for so long. And it's a typical feature for this sort of filemanager.

crab, that is such crap. (couldn't resist. you must get that a lot?)
Sometimes I prefer blondes, sometimes I like brunettes. Sometimes i've got RSI in my wrist, sometimes in my fingers, sometimes in my trapezium and shoulder from using the mouse.
And if you wanna move non-sequential items, a mouse is much faster than a keyboard.

let's say you wanna move files called file1, file51, fie63, file115 and file963 from D-drive to the C-drive.
In this case you can't move quickly with your keys through that list. If you only had files, starting with a different letter of the alphabet, in maps of no more than 26 items, yeah then the keyboard would be faster. Unfortunately, this very rarely occurs.
