Descript.ion comment only 256 chars?
Hi,
Is the comment length limit of 256 chars a format limitation or a TC one?
TIA

Hi Roman,
(No smiley) If I well understood, descript.ion allows only a single line on the HD
¤ Isn't the DOS line-lenght limited at 255 characters?
¤ I think...
files.bbs allow several lines (in the same lenght...)
(No smiley) Kind regards,
Clo

Not serious...
2SanskritFritz
Hello!
• It's just a small quibbling between Roman and I, not a very serious issue I guess...
¤ Like I told him in another topic, I'ld prefer one more significant smiley instead several less useful... I hope that the smiley-collection shall be increased a bit. Do you wish this too?
Kind regards,
Clo

Hi again!
¤ Like you see, the user's opinions are various about the smilies use (thanks SanskritFritz & Sheepdog)...
• Comming back to the original subject, just a detail which is missing in the English Help / Tutorial, but that is quoted in the French ones:
descript.ion supports long file-names, while files.bbs are limited at 8.3 DOS names...
If you ask for this to me kindly, I'll add in the next Tutorial update!
Ever friendly,
Clo

In my opinion, smilies make posts extremely difficult to read, so should be placed at the ends of lines or paragraphs only and used quite sparingly.
Lines that begin with smilies or have embedded smilies are especially problematic to read.
It's sort of like exclamation points or all caps. If every sentence ended with an exclamation point, where is the meaning of the exclamation point?
Same with smilies, indeed the same with too much bold or italics or what have you.
Our words should stand by themselves and not need graphical help except occasionally.

Hi!
¤ I respect your opinion, but I guess that smilies avoid many times conflictual dialogs, because they can show without any ambiguity that a sentence is a joke, for instance.
• Else, maybe you don't like colours and pictures, you are free at this...
I think that a long text without any decoration or extra indication is very tedious to read, and doesn't incite the users to watch it. In that case, I skip such texts... if they don't contain a very useful reply / info.
• Other styles aren't very easy to read here; I accept them as is. You didn't protest against them, it seems...
• Please, have a pinch of tolerance, the forum rules don't prohibit smilies, even they advise to use them.
• This off-topic aside is closed for me. Whether you'ld tell me more, please send me a private e-mail.
Best regards,

That's true - in some situations emoticons say more then many words.Clo wrote:I guess that smilies avoid many times conflictual dialogs, because they can show without any ambiguity that a sentence is a joke, for instance.

I wasn't protesting against you in particular, though yes, you are the most frequent embellisher of text who posts here. I also agree that there is a place for smilies, just as there is a place for bold text or exclamation points.
Most computer professionals might claim to read for a living since, after all, most communication on the screen is textural.
Since I read continuously all day long, I wish for reading as if it was well type-set in a long novel: relaxing to the eyes and communicative to the mind.
An occasional well-placed smilie is frequently "to the point". My complaint is only about the dilution of emphasis and the visual fatigue that overuse of smilies may occasion, not their appropriate use in situ.
Topic closed. I meant no offense to anyone.
