Some suggestions for Total commander 9 maybe. :)

Post by *markthepig »

Hello there.

Ive been using windows commander now Total commander since 1996. I replaced Dos Navigator with Windows commander back in the day and i was happy how much windows commander was like my beloved Dos Navigator.
Im a registerd user of Total Commander at home.
At office i have to use a free alternative due to company polices.
Ive compared all files managers under windows that are similar with Total Commander and these are my suggestions.

Suggestions.

1.I would like to be able to have .EXE,BAT,COM. files showed first in list even (if column in sorted by name). This should be implemented in Display->Sorting (where you can define groups, like ".EXE,BAT,COM" or whatever you want to be displayed first). This was a nice option that Dos Navigator had and i miss this very much :). ex: Unreal Commander.
2.When copy/move files the window should be on a separate thread by default (without pressing the background button). ex: Double Commander, Unreal Commander.
3. Should have also a nice free disk space bar above tabs. ex: ex: Double Commander, Unreal Commander.
4.Que window from copy/move file to remember position and layout.

Hope I'm not upsetting anybody by suggesting some features from other file managers. Because i don't think this should be a matter of who is copying who. Double Commander and Unreal Commander are very much inspired by Total Commander as Windows Commander was inspired by Dos Navigator and Norton Commander back in the day.

Best Regards
Mark

Check out the AlwaysCopyInBackground INI setting. I fyou set this to 1, it will default to always copying in the background.
Of all the planets I've been to, this one is my favorite.

Thank you for pointing this out. This is ok, but the window in background always has different positions. In my opinion window position should be saved (as lister window). Or it should be centered like (copy/move dialog).

Thank you

Check background transfer window title context menu and enable 'save position' option.

I always wondered why there are so many background transfer windows. Why not display all transfer in a single window?

Hello markthepig,

if you are not mind using plugins (while waiting for implementation of the requested features by Ghisler ;-) ), I warmly recommend TWinKey. Amongst many other useful things, it offers a feature to display files in groups. You can define, which groups in which order should be shown on top of file lists and which files groups in which order should be shown at last:

TWinKey's help wrote:Order by group

Show First option allows to put groups of files to the top of the file list and Show Last option allows to put files at end of the file list. Group definition is a sequence of wildcards delimited by semicolon. Groups are separated by vertical line. By default, groups are sorted in the listed order, and the files within each group retain the current TC sort. If you put a sign ">" at the beginning of the definition, then the files within each group will sorted according to wildcard sequence also.

It is possible to use TC saved searches and predefined selections as wildcard. Name of TC's definition should be prefixed by "=" sign.

You can enable/disable grouping without erasing whole definition.

Grouping can be set globally (on "File Panels" page) or per folder basis.

Examples:
1. String "*.zip:*.rar:*.7z|*.exe:*.dll:*.w?x" will put at top of the file list all archives followed by executables files.
2. String ">*.bmp:*.jpg:*.png" will put at top of the file list BMP files followed by JPG files followed by PNG files.
3. String "=Archives|=Executables" will put at top of the file list all archives followed by executables files according to saved TC's definitions.

NOTES: File grouping isn't applicable inside archives, FTP, FS-plugins and virtual folders. When file under the cursor is deleted, the cursor can jump on to the "really" following file and not on the next file in filelist.
It need some more steps to install and configure the plugin, but this process is adequately described in the Readme.html.

Thank you van Dusen. It looks very interesting. This will do the job i think with order by group.
Much appreciated

Yes, similar to the dialogs currently used in web browsers.

I also liked the old iTunes progress window style. There was one window where you could select view which should be selected and one of them was the progress window. It's of course something that has to fit in the overall window architecture of a program.
