how can I access a password protected directory shared on my LAN?

Just enter the address like \\server\share, and the PocketPC will ask you for user name and password (at least that's what happening on my two devices). Please note that this will _not_ work via the cradle. A true network connection is needed, e.g. via Lan, Wlan, or a dialup connection.

Perhaps, because the directory is not browsable without a password?

Could be - I don't know the internals of Windows Mobile enough. It also seems that Windows Mobile only supports unecrypted authentication (simple user name and password), not the more protected MS LANMAN.Perhaps, because the directory is not browsable without a password?
Please try whether it works when you allow anonymous.
